The Windy Smithy is owned and operated by Jon Snow, who has been working with metal since 1996, and operates on a semi-mobile basis from the Blackdown Hills in Devon.

The first incarnation of the Windy Smithy was when, with the encouragement and support of Tony Murphy of Ynys Mon (Anglesey), a forge made from a gas bottle, powered by a wind generator, was set up on a small drove. The first products were hooks, pokers and exercises from the excellent book Edge of the Anvil, by Jack Andrews (ITDG Publications).

Originally inspired by the desire to make quality hand tools for developing communities, he went on to study Blacksmithing and Metalwork at Hereford College, where the emphasis was more towards training Artist Blacksmiths,  and a huge amount of wisdom was imparted to his little mind.

Following college, the huge demand for affordable and efficient wood burners meant that a new and improved burner design evolved from an already superb pattern available at the time, and these have proved to be enduringly popular over the years, with improvements and new models being added every year.

He has been making hand tools since being asked for a froe in the first week of blacksmithing, and has travelled extensively in Scandinavia, learning Edge Tool techniques from some of the best Norwegian, Swedish and Finnish toolsmiths. This was only possible due to the support of the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust, who gave him the opportunity of a lifetime to further his craft.

Now the Windy Smithy produces a wide range of hand crafted products, from Gates to Axes to Woodburners, and even a towable living wagon.

In the interest of our policy of continuous product improvement and response to supplier demands, we reserve the right to change prices and specifications of all our products, with immediate effect and without prior notice.

Hey Jon,

Got the burner yesterday. Lightning fast delivery! Wonderful – we are very pleased with it indeed, would highly recommend you.

Thanks again,
Simon and Sue

Hi Jon,

I thought you would be interested to see a photograph of your stove in situ.. I am very very happy with it... it is a joy to light up and stays warm for hours... Many people are interested in where it came from! More images are on my website www.theyogagarden.co.uk

Thank you for your advice on selecting the right stove and getting it to me so promptly!
Nina

Hi Jon,
Just wanted to thank you for the Henry we picked up this weekend. It is fantastic!! We got it going on the Friday afternoon after collecting it from you, and were instantly impressed with the control we now have! We slept in the yurt that night, and, true to your word, it kept in all night - even with a limited amount of ash bed. Mark was able to re light it in the morning from the embers, which was brilliant!

Then, on Saturday evening, we hosted 13 people in the yurt, as a bit of a yurt warming party, we served chili con carne in a big pan, kept lovely and warm on the top of the wood burner, and all our guests were really warm and toasty - some of them even having to step outside to cool down, and we had to keep the door open!!

Anyway, we are delighted, and are really pleased with it. I think we will be looking at getting a Henry Ranger from you at some point next year, if we do decide to live in one of the yurts, as it will give us more cooking options :)

Thanks again :)
Emma

Hi Jon,

Just received my Louis stove today and I’m delighted – some lovely details that delight the eye. A properly tapered scroll which should be shown to all those who work with metal who do a jig bend on bar stock. A nice little detail on the back corner of the fire box rather than leaving square, and a nice practical touch on the draft adjuster so it’s not too hot to hold. So bloody well done for turning out a proper job. We will look after it and enjoy it.

Cheers
Adrian

Hi Jon,

T hanks for the stoves - they are really beautiful and obviously really well made - great job, will look forward to seeing them in action.

All the best
Josie

Hi Jon

Stove and all kit arrived safely yesterday - and were installed and working last night. Many thanks, we're delighted and much warmer!

Charlie & Christine

Jon

Just wanted to say how brilliant the woodburner is. It keeps us beautifully warm and does all our cooking and cups of tea and stays going overnight so we only have to let it go out to clear it out every so often. See attached photo.

Thanks
Wendy and Jeff

Hi Jon,
Thought you might like a couple of photos of the installed wendy stove. It's fab and really heats the shed very efficiently. I will spred the word around to other shed owners so who knows you might get some more orders. We have some sub zero temperatures up here so the stove has come into its own.

Kind regards,
Roz

Hi Jon

Just a quick email to say thanks for the woodburner. It is brilliant. It keeps luke's building lovely and warm and is very efficient. Unlike our big woodburner it keeps on burning slowly with the shutter off for the whole night. If you wanted to put a testimonial on your site, we'd be happy to write one and tell customers what we think of ours.

Super

AWESOME!
Thanks a lot Jon.

Cheers,
Frits

Dear Jon (Arthur's dad)

Thank you very much for your stove. It is a wonderful, beautiful piece of work and warms our life without equal
measure. Having admired Arthur in detail I can now appreciate the love, design and work that has gone into your stoves. Again thank you very much for letting us have one. All the best to you and your work.

Casper and Kate

Hi Jon

Just to say many thanks for the beautiful tools that arrived today they really are a work of art, and i know that they will get lots of use, im sure ill be back to you in the new year for some more framing pins, and in the mean time ill let anyone i know about you and your services.

Thanks again
Chris

Have to say that it gives a surprising amount of heat for its size and is very nicely and solidly made.

Sam

Dear John,

Many thanks for the Wendy stove and quick delivery. I installed it in my boat a few weeks ago now and it's fantastic, keeping me warm over the frosty nights we had last week.

With many thanks,
Rob

The Windy Smithy stoves have been an excellent addition to our yurts and loved by all our clients. The stoves are light weight and therefore easy to transport. The stoves transform the yurts into a really warm and snug space. We camped over NYE in a yurt with a Louis stove and managed to keep us and a 1 yr old baby warm all night when it was -2 outside!

We also have fire saucers, which are very popular. These are excellent for camping when you don't want to burn the grass or for using in the garden. The height of the fire saucer is great for sitting round and disperses the heat to keep everyone warm. The fire saucers also pack down easily for transportation.John is great to work with, flexible and reliable.

Hi - bought a Louis Burner off you over 2 years ago for my Narrowboat; just thought I'd send you a pic of it in place. Really can't praise this enough; much better than any of the brand name 'glass fronted' crap you see about and always raises a few eyebrows here on the canals.
